The Habar Makador of the Gadabuursi of the Conquest of Abyssinia: Futuh Al Habasha

It is the advent of colonialism, favoritism, dislike and ignorance on the Gadabuursi genealogy that have made people resort to spread propaganda on the Gadabuursi.

First when talking about the Gadabuursi. People try to propagate that they are not mentioned in the Futuh Al Habasha. Which is pretty laughable, because the conquest was mostly on their land.

When talking about Gadabuursi. There are two main fractions of the Gadabursi, the Habar 'Affan and Habar Makador. The latter making up roughly 90%.

Let's look at a couple  sources.

Bollettino della Società geografica italiana, 1890's

Image
Peoples of Horn of Africa, 1955's

Image
Nuova Antologia 1890

The next genealogy is very incorrect, because Mahad 'Asse and Makahil both fall under Makador/Habar Makador , the other Yunis are not part of Jibril Yunis , but Makahil and the rest of the Samaroon fall under Habar 'Affan.

Although you can see Habar Mikador is visible in the genealogical table.

154 Tribes of Somaliland 1941

Correct would have been like this

Habar Cafaan
  • Gobe(Ibrahiim) Siciid (Gobe)
  • Cumar Siciid (Cumar Gacalquud)
  • Cali Ganuun Siciid (Cali Ganuun)
  • Xeebjire Siciid (Xeebjire)
  • Jibracin Siciid(Jibracin)
  • Ciisse Samaroon (Reer Ciise)
  • Yesuf Samaroon (Habar Yesuf)
  • Subeer Samaroon (Subeer)
    • Muse
      • Muse Fin
        • Ismail Musa
        • Abdi Musa
        • Haron Musa
    • Rer Hamud
    • Faroleh
    • Hassan Sa'ad
    • Degawein
Habar Makador (Makador)
  • Makahil
    • Bahabar Hassan
    • Muse Makahil
      • Farah Yunis
      • Ahmed Yunis
      • Mohamud Yunis
      • Nur Yunis
        • Rer Mohamed
      • Aden Yunis
      • Shirdon Yunis
      • Jibril Yunis
        • Rer Dudub
  • Mahad Casse
    • Bahabar Musa
    • Bahabar Aden
    • Bahabar Eli
    • Bahabar Abokor

Gadabursi, Habar Makador and Habar Cafaan
N'ell Harrar, 1896

L'anthropologie, 1916

Now let us continue.

Why 90%?

Now for example a source from the 1890's mentions the Gadabuursi at that time to total 43,275 spears!

Image
Scottish Geographical Society 1890's

The rer Makahil are the other Makahil apart from the 3 mentioned.

Rer Makahil . 12,375
Jibril Yunus . 3,450
Adan Yunus . 2,590
Nur Yunus 9,940
Mahomed Asa . 9,320
Habr Affan 5,600
____________________
Total : 43, 275

Remove the  Habar 'affan and only think that will remain is Habar Makador.

Lets look at the image again.

Habar Makador in total is 37,675 spears!

37,675 / 43,275 = 0.8705950317735413 x 100 = 87,06%

So they make up around 90% of the total Gadabuursi population!

So you could imagine that in the past the tribe which encompassed the north west of the Somali peninsula went around as Habar Makador.

Now let us continue to the real work The Futuh Al Habasha.

In Page 27 of the Futuh Al Habasha: Conquest of Abyssinia it mentions Ahmed Gerri(Gurey) of the Somali and him
being of the Habr Makadi/Maqdi. Underneath the page it clarifies it being of the Habar Makadur of the Gadabursi. AND IT IS!

Futuh al-habaÅ¡a : The Conquest of Ethiopia page 27

Page 43 mentions that the first tribe to reach the Imam was the Habar Maqadi//Maqdi and they encamped above the valley of Harar.

Futuh al-habaÅ¡a : The Conquest of Ethiopia page 43

What is the "Valley of Harrar"? And who's native to the region?

The Valley of Harrar is nothing but the Harerghe Valley, or the Harrare Valley or as the colonials used to call it after what the Gadabursi Somalis named it. The Harrawa Valley

Image
From the British Library a map from the 1920's

Image
17 Trips through Somaliland 1885

Image
Tiger Slayer By Order, 1915

And many more sources that mention the Harawwe Valley,  but anyone knows that The Harar Valley or Harrawa Valley is inhabited by the Gadabuursi(Habar Makador).

The strongest evidence is page 82 of the "Futuh Al-Habasha: The Conquest of Abyssinia" which mentions:
"Futuh Al-Habasha: The Conquest of Abyssinia" page 82

Husain Musa Bin 'Abd Allah Makida, he is of the Habr Maqdi clan. This strongly fits into the Gadabursi genealogy as Husain Musa Bin 'Abd Allah (Makahil) "Makidor".
The Habar pre-fix is removed when doing the "abtirsi(patrilineage)" just like with the Garhajis, Awal, Yusuf Samaroon(Habar Yusuf) etc.

And Makahil not mentioned since the banner at that time was Makador.
The Galla in Northern Somaliland. 1959 page 31

As we can see  Ugas Ali Makahildheer was born in 1575, his genealogy clarifies that the banner at that time was Habar Makador/Makador.

Makador
Makahil
Muse
Makahildeer
Ugas Cali 1575

He established the Gadabuursi Sultanate or Ugaasdom after the the wars with the Christian Abyssinians. It is good to note that his mother was Queen Khadijah , she was of the Geri (Aaba Yoonis) clan also mentioned in the Futuh.

[Ugaas Cali waxa uu boqornimada qaaday kolkay taariikhdu ahayd 1607dii Miilaadiga, waxuuna ku dhashay meesha la yidhaa Dhoobo oo u dhaw Saylac kolkuu sanadku ahaa 1575 Miilaadiga,Hooyadii waxa la odhan jiray Khadiija Sheekh waxayna Daarood (Gari-Aba-Yoonis)Ugaas Cali wuxuu ahaa nin aad wax u yaqaan,oo wuxuu aad ugu xeel dheera diinta Islaamka.wuxuuna wax ku bartay Harar iyo Saylac.Sheekhyadii wax baray waxa u waynaa Amiir Nuur (Sheekh Nuur Yoonis Muuse) oo ka mid ahaa culimada ahaana ina adeerkiii. Ugaas Cali luqada Carabiga wuu akhriyi iyo qoriba jirey, wuxuu ahaa nin caalima ah wixii dhib ahna ka durka, wuxuuna ahaa nin aad u qurux badan oo dheer, waxan uu lahaa gadh wayn oo laga habadaysto.Ugaasku waxa uu lahaa aftahanimo kol haduu hadlana laga wada dhagaysto, waxaana la sheegay kitaab quraan ah oo uu ku qorey gacantiisa inuu jiro kolkii uu boqornimada qaaday.
Ugaas Cali waxa uu geeryooday 1639 Miilaadigii, wuxuuna ku geeryooday oo lagu aasay Gabiley, waana la siyaarta qabrigiisa]

Also the son of Aw Barre is mentioned in the Futuh Al Habasha.

Image
Futuh Al Habasha page 281

and we all know where Sheikh Aw-barre today is buried.

Image
Google Maps

He is buried in the region of the Habr Makador (Gadabursi).

Also based on chronology you can see that the Afars were to first to join the Jihad, after them the Habar Makador and Geri who always lived next to the Habar Makador followed suit.

 Islam in Ethiopia, 1965

Based on multiple sources you can see that the Geri was always almost mentioned as inhabiting the area west of the Gadabuursi
 Image
First Footsteps in East Africa, 1856

So based on the first tribes that joined we can see that the events happened as follows:

Google Maps

You can also find in smaller numbers today  Makador sub-clan's among the Mandaluug Dir, who the Gadabuursi belong to and the Gorgorah Dir who also partook in the Jihad along with the Habar Makador of the Gadabuursi..
 Futuh Al Habasha page 123

Concerning the Makador among the Mandaluug.
Image
From the Scottish Geographical Society 1885

In the table above you can see "Medelluke" and "Rer Makador". One should note that the Medelluke do not claim descent from Ogaden, but rather came to be allied to them after being dispersed by the Christian Abyssinian invaders.

These Makador segments prove that the Habar Makador/Makador of the Gadabuursi partook in the jihad and they ended up isolated from the Gadabuursi Habar Makador.

Especially the one in the southern Madaluug, which a southern Madaluug brother himself explained to me that there is among them a subclan called "Reer Maxamed(Axmed) Guray of the Muse Makador"

In the future  I will mention more about the Conquest of Abyssinia and  I will discuss a controversy. Stay tuned.

A great poem made by Professor Togane

Poem by Prof.Togane (Abgaal man)
(Although this Master Piece on the Somali Clan was written few years back and some consider it outdated, It still remains funny and renders you to smile to the truth)

Pilot fish are pragmatic pioneers
they are also visionary fish
they lead other fish
to their happy hunting grounds
to their happy haunts
to their desired destinations
to their day of rendezvous with destiny
The Gadabursi
(May their tribe increase!)
are the brave pilot fish of Somalia
in Borama
under the Tree of Wise Counsel
the Gadabursi mothered the mothers of the North
the Gadabursi are piloting the ill-mannered Iidor
to peace
to bashbash
to barwaqo
the Gadabursi have decided to go global
whereas the Iidor have decided
to go ghetto
to go it alone
to go haywire
to go UDI (Unilateral Declaration of Independence)
to go MIA (Missing In Action)
to go AWOL
to take French leave from sanity
If you have
an idea to advance
a project to promote
a mission to mould
a vision to forward
a passion to plant
a notion to nurse
a goal to sell
get a Gadabursi
as a guide
as a guru
as a go-to man
get a Gadabursi
to say it for you
to sell it for you
to tout it for you
the Gadabursi are so sophisticated
that they well say it in Hebrew
that they well sell it in Dutch
that they well say it in German
that they well sell it in Greek
that they well say it in English
wholly forgetting (and it vexes them very much)
that Somali is what you speak!
if you have a cause to espouse
get a Gadabursi
as your Spin Doctor
as your Spinmeister
get a Gadabursi
to say it for you
to sell it for you
to tout it for you
for a Gadabursi will make your cause
sound sweeter than the song of the bulbul
for you won’t get
any guff
any gaffe
any gammon
from a Gadabursi
for the Gadabursi abound in PhDs
whereas the Abgal abound in asses
whereas the Habar Gidir abound in natural born killers
The Gadabursi eschew jaad & chew on knowledge
Whereas the Iidor chew jaad & eschew knowledge
The Gadabursi know
how to stand the Iidor gaff
The Gadabursi progress
because they oppress nobody
whereas the Habar Gidir regress
because they oppress everybody
The Gadabursi
(May their tribe increase!)
are the brave pilot fish of Somalia

Imam, Mujahid or Sheikh Samaroon Said

The Cambridge History of Africa, Volume 3

This legend fought wars way before the Adal Wars or Conquest of Abyssinia in the 16th century. The only Muslim leader known to have fought in the western flank in the armies of Se'ad ad-Din.
